what was thw recording level you used for zoom h4?
Is there a special way to cut or film a documentary?
Hi Tom
Why not filming with the panny gh2? it doesn’t overheat and if you hacked it up you could get real cool footage.
Also Tom you only used zoom h4n, I have heard the Tascam dr100 mrkII is better for audio interviews? do you know if its true?
A huge well done from me sir. A delightful no nonsense, informative tutorilal for the layman who does not carry a film crew and loads of gear. All your advice is so realistic and sensible right down to be careful with your gear on display! Oh my God I love the quality of your camera too, the images are mouth watering. beats my SD700 out of sight. Must get a Dslr.
The best tutorial and advice on this subject I could find well done. Subscribed!

im sorry, i did read description, i know that your model mic .. Thank.. keep that way.. i love your tutorials.. very pro.
Hello.. what mic did u use? its a condenser mic?. Im Adrian from Argentina
I love your vids. do you recommend using an audio recorder with a pro/semi pro camcorder?
I need the advice plz
thank you
The Tascam DR-40 is a cheaper, but great substitute for the Zoom H4n, and I find that it works great! The difference between the two is not worth the $150 more you would have to pay. I use the Tascam in most of my videos along with a shotgun microphone attached to it via XLR inputs, and they sound great! Check for yourself if you need proof!
This is a great video, I learned a LOT! I’m working on a short film right now and these audio tips will help me out a ton! I have some short films on my channel, if you’d like to check them out!
what len(s) did you use for this film?
Great instructional video.
great video dude! thank you!
Viewed your tutorial and loved it. I was just wondering why you chose Nikon lenses. I really appreciate all of your help!!!
Love this, I bought an H4
Loved this video, I love all your vids, thanks for the tutorials, I am learning a lot from you as someone trying to be an independent film maker. Is there any advice you can give me? Also, I am thinking about switching my canon HF G10 camera for a 60D or 7D what do you think. Is the quality better? Thank you Tom.
Super rad tutorial.
inspiring , influential , informative and fun .. I like the video it self just as much as the information in it …
Tom clarifies this on the previous video, often his producer will approach them after the shot and get consent and the legalities sussed.
Hey Tom, very nice. I was wondering how the H4 zoom coped with multiple people in the shot, I noticed it did very well with the one, so can u please show how effective it is in a conversation of multiple input. Thanks.
Hi Tom! Do you recommend to use a picture style such as “CineStyle” and just color correct in post to get a great picutre or do you prefer picture profiles such as “Landscape”?
Hey Tom, Thank you for your inspiring videos. I recently made a short noir/thriller shot in south east asia using similar techniques. I did the sound using the ZOOM H4 using your video as a guide. Was a great help for my first time doing my own sound. Please put me on any list for any of your tutorials. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Not having read all the 102 comments I thought I’d offer up a program that I’ve just purchase to sync 90 minutes of footage from a fixed camera (single take) and a handheld Nikon D90 multiple takes – I used singular software add the dot com called pluraleyes to sync all the clips – using premiere Pro CS5.5 worked great 5 minutes instead of 3 days and no clap board
Hey tom! I am a film make but I am only 14 uhhh yeah but I dont have much money is there a good cheaper microphone in the price range 10 -150$ it doesn’t need to be the best microphone ever just something that can record audio better then the canon t2i mic… hopefully u can reply thanks bye XD
