They may be your rules, but it still doesn’t make it a valid death match. That’s like death match between a Nissan Altima and an Infiniti G37.

If I had the decision before, I would go with a Canon Rebel t3i.
By the way, Im using a T3i for video production and Im pretty satisfied. Considering the fact that the T3i (600D), 60D and the 7D has exactly the same sensor, they have the same quality on video mode. So as the T3i is the cheapest I had to doubt to choose it.

Canon is better for video and the main reason is because the video bitrate is 42Mbps and that is what you need for broadcast HDTV. Nikon the bitrate on the D4 and D800 is 28Mbps so not TV station will want it.
The reason it needs to be high is because TV stations need to encode for over the air, Cable TV, Satellite and so on so they need a very high bitrate so the file holds together.
The Panasonic Lumix GH2 is the best camera for video. You can hack to to 200Mbps.

To reiterate what everyone is saying: Why would you compare these two cameras? “My deathmatch, my rules”… That doesn’t make sense, even Nikon and canon don’t put these cameras in the same category. There is no winner or loser here, for sure. T3i vs D5100 would prove more useful, but you wouldn’t discover much difference. D3100 is a rival more to the T3/1100D (and, the D3100 absolutely kills it…) You make the job of people who sell the cameras difficult, like Ken Rockwell, but you’re smarter.
I think D5100 vs T3i or D3100 vs T3 would be more fair, but hey, its your deathmatch, your cameras, as you sy, your rules. I think the Canon is the ultimate video-making camera, though the D5100 can rival it to a certain extent. However, I think the Nikon D3100 is easier for me to use. I have tried both cameras (but I use a D5100) but both are excellent cameras, both equally good for anyone. I’d say, try the cameras first before making a choice.
Thinking of going for the D1300 for my first camera, love the better image quality but i think the t3i looks way more user friendly especially for a beginner like myself, also id like a bigger camera rather a small one

imo this is not a very accurate comparision deathmatch. You should have chosen either a Nikon D3100 vs Canon T3/1100D or Nikon D5100 vs Canon T3I.

Look good, and give some helpful advice. What more could I want? I have the Canon 600D (T31) and am very pleased with it. Also have a Sony A55 which is also superb, but in a ‘different’ way.
